Bolivia Tour – A Birding Expedition Across Ecosystems

We have developed the Bolivia Tour to give you a taste of the diversity of habitats in Bolivia in a twenty-one-day period. The tour covers the two main tropical lowland habitats, Bolivia’s Beni Savanna and rainforest, and then travels the Andes mountains to visit dry forest, three different cloud forest areas, highland plateau, Lake Titicaca and the rare high Andean Polylepis forests. This tour covers regions that host over 900 bird species, bringing us within range of 75% of Bolivia’s range-restricted species and half of its endemics.

This tour can be custom adapted to fit individual preferences. Some people extend this trip to travel to Apolo to see some of those regional specialties.

Day-by-Day Highlights / Itinerary Summary

After your international arrival in Santa Cruz, we’ll head to the Beni Tropical Savanna to explore the remarkable Barba Azul Nature Reserve for three nights. This vital reserve was established to protect the world’s most important habitat for the Bolivian endemic Blue-throated Macaw. The rigorous protection against fire and hunting has made Barba Azul Nature Reserve the best site in Bolivia for mammals and rare savanna birds like Ibera Seedeater, Cock-tailed Tyrant, Sharp-tailed Tyrant, and Black-masked Finch, alongside regional highlights like the Streamer-tailed Tyrant, Toco Toucan, Greater Rhea, and Long-winged Harrier (see bird list).

Next, a dramatic shift of scenery, we begin with four relaxed nights at the amazing Sadiri Lodge, nestled in the breathtaking foothill rainforest of Madidi National Park. Sadiri Lodge, located on the Sadiri mountain is a cooler rainforest with well-designed trails at different levels, including into the humid lowland jungle. The diversity of birds in the moist forest is mindboggling (eBird species list).

Then the tour starts to explore the diversity of Bolivia’s Andes mountains. We start from Santa Cruz and head to Asociación Armonía’s Red-fronted Macaw Reserve. With cool nights and clear skies, this reserve protects a key river-edge cliff where the Bolivian endemic Red-fronted Macaw breeds. The area also hosts other endemics such as the Cliff Parakeet, Bolivian Blackbird, and Bolivian Earthcreeper. Birding here is relaxed and rewarding, with open landscapes and approachable wildlife. Look out for Andean Condors, Black-chested Buzzard-Eagles, Fawn-breasted Tanagers, and Andean Great Pampa-Finches foraging in nearby farmlands (see eBird list).

We will visit one of three cloud forest sites along the Andes. We will spend a day visiting Siberia, which is a higher elevation Cloud Forest. We then travel to Cochabamba to first visit the cloud forest in this region.

We will then emerge into the dry Andean valleys of Cochabamba, where we’ll spend two days visiting highland lakes, arid valleys, and the critically threatened Polylepis forest, home to six endemic species. Our primary target here is the Cochabamba Mountain-Finch, alongside key species such as Giant Conebill, Maquis Canastero, and Giant Hummingbird.

Now that you have adjust to midlevel altitude, we will fly to La Paz and stay at a Lake Titicaca Hotel. Here we will see high altitude Andean puna, altiplano and aquatic species, like the Titicaca Flightless Grebe. The last two days we will visit the abounding La Paz Cloud Forest to search our specific species in this third visit to cloud forest habitat.
